#8 Joseph Gimpel

I am Joe Gimpel Jr from Daytona Beach, Florida and this will be my third Cannonball challenge. In the past two I was able to ride my favorite marque, one a 1928 R62 BMW and the other a 1928 R52 BMW. They were both in pretty rough shape when I got them but after my rebuilds, which took awhile since all the parts needed came from Germany and Poland, they looked and ran like brand new. At least at the beginning...

So for this effort, since BMW didn't build bikes until 1923, I've decided to go for an American made machine. This 1913 Thor is a single cylinder 625 cc displacement 5 horsepower bike. According to Thor's literature, top speed could be 69 mph (if the hill is going in the right direction and there's a tail wind). So 45 average mph should be a breeze (remember, tail wind?).

As for my strategy, my road crew suggests we take it one day at a time. As always: Ride. Wrench. Repeat. And enjoy the whole experience with all these other fine people.
