The Transcontinental Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run

Sturgis, South Dakota, July 8, 2020 – Jason Sims, owner of the Motorcycle Cannonball, has announced that the historic transcontinental event scheduled for 17 days in September has been rescheduled due to the ongoing effects of COVID-19. The biennial event, though held on U.S. soil, is an international line up of riders from around the globe and the 2020 race was to include as many as 120 riders on motorcycles manufactured before 1929. Scheduled to depart Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on September 10, 2020 and arrive for the Grande Finale on September 27, 2020 in South Padre Island, Texas, racers, staff and the fans from around the world were excited to watch the cross country ride unfold.

“An attitude of, “full steam ahead, gung-ho, and business and usual,” has been my credo for the last few months,” stated event organizer, Jason Sims. “We’ve been working on this run for more than a year and a half and were just completing the last few details. I never had an ounce of concern that COVID-19 would impact the 2020 Motorcycle Cannonball like it has. Heck, we’ve weathered natural and logistical disasters in the past and managed to come out on top, but this comes down to the safety and well-being of not just the participants but of the general public, as well. While conducting the last course run, it became obvious that the socially responsible thing to do is to reschedule. With a route that encompasses more than 4,000 miles across nine states, we’re leaving a huge footprint across our country. So, with everyone’s best interest in mind, the decision to postpone the run until September 2021 was made.”

It is anticipated that all the host cities and gracious stop hosts who were already signed on will participate next September as riders make their way along the same route. The new anticipated run date will be September 9-26, 2021. Riders are assured their same position for the 2021 Motorcycle Cannonball. “As an organization, we will continue to focus on ways to enhance this historic, “Man and Machine vs. the Miles,” event. While maintaining the integrity of the run for generations to come, will stay commited to arranging the most challenging antique motorcycle event in the world,” stated Jason Sims.

Meanwhile, be sure to check the website and social media sites for information, updates and rider build progress as they make ready for the 2021 Motorcycle Cannonball.

Just because we’re all about antiques that doesn’t mean we’re living in the past. Current events have necessitated a few adjustments in the way things are done for the Motorcycle Cannonball and we have been busily updating things like registration, inspection and daily starts and stops. We have a more streamlined process that allows for social distancing all along the route so please make your plans to join us at our announced stops.

Right now,  Route Master John Classen is hitting the road for his final trip to ride the route and meet our hosts. With just over ten weeks left on the calendar, we’re feeling the excitement of the first gathering in Michigan and we look forward to seeing you all there. Check back often, things will be announced as John reports in! Meanwhile, stay healthy, be safe, and please take care of each other! See you soon!

We’re living in tumultuous times. Nothing is as it was. Trying to make arrangements for an adventure like the Motorcycle Cannonball is a complex endeavor under normal conditions, but these days are far from normal. Laying out a route with over night stops has become even more challenging since many hotels are not operating, businesses remain closed, restaurants have shorter hours…all of which makes for difficult planning. But, we are marching on with determination and we will be sharing details as they are finalized. So, check back often, scroll through the site to see what’s new and know that we look forward to meeting folks along the route this September! We can’t wait to get back on the road!

The Motorcycle Cannonball will have a stop in Victoria, TX on Friday, September 25, 2020.

The Motorcycle Cannonball will be hosted as riders finish for the day at Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, AL on Monday, September 21, 2020.

George Barber started collecting and restoring classic sports cars in 1989, but his interest soon turned to motorcycles. He recognized that there was not a museum which reflected the history of motorcycles around the world and wanted to preserve motorcycle history in the United States in a way that represents an international aspect and to supply an example of motorcycles that until then could only have been seen in books and magazines. This was the theme used in the development of the Barber collection. An interesting aspect of the collection is that restorations are done in-house. Out of the same shop, a vintage motorcycle race team operated with the challenge of maintaining and racing historically significant machinery. These bikes were routinely campaigned around the United States and the world so that they could be enjoyed and appreciated in their original setting, rather than collecting dust in a garage. The Barber Vintage Motorcycle Team has won seven national championships.

In 1994, the Barber collection became the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum when it was granted 501(c)3 not for profit status. On March 14, 1995, the museum was officially opened to the public in the original location on Birmingham’s Southside. The museum operated here until November 1, 2002.
The Museum reopened at its new location at the Barber Motorsports Park on September 19, 2003. Along the way vehicles from the museum’s collection have been featured in exhibits around the world. Twenty-one motorcycles were selected for the famed Art of the Motorcycle exhibit at the Guggenheim’s New York and Bilbao, Spain location as well as the Field Museum in Chicago. England’s Goodwood Festival of Speed has featured cars from the Barber collection. Birmingham’s own Museum of Art has conducted a special exhibit featuring motorcycles from the Barber collection. The Museum has shown Motorcycles twice at Pebble Beach coming home with the first-place trophy both times. In April 2014, Barber was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world’s largest motorcycle collection.
The collection now has over 1700 vintage and modern motorcycles as well as a substantial collection of Lotus and other racecars. It is considered the largest in North America and possibly the world. There are approximately 900 motorcycles on display at any given time. These bikes range from 1902 to current-year production. There are bikes from 22 countries that represent 220 different marques. The common street bike is represented, as well as rare one-off Gran Prix race machinery. Bikes have been purchased from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden, but also as near as down the street.
The Barber Motorsports Park, home of the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is also the home of a World-Class 2.38-mile Road Course, which has been built to FIA and FIM standards. The facility, which has been called the best in the nation, is 45-foot-wide with 16 turns and has 80 feet of elevation change. The paved paddock is tiered so that all competitors have the perfect view. Probably the most unique factor of this facility is that from most points around the track, the spectator has at least 80 percent total visibility of the on-track action.
